Houston may be known mostly as being a concrete jungle filled with big city hustle and bustle but nature is never too far away. Escape from the city for a day and find yourself submersed in nature with these Top 5 Places to Hike near Houston, Texas. All within an hour and a half, these parks are a great way to experience some adventure not far from home. Pack a picnic, a swim suit, and some good hiking shoes and plan a day outdoors.

Houston Hikes: Huntsville State Park

Address: 565 Park Road 40 west, Huntsville, TX 77340
Located about 70 miles north of Houston is Huntsville State Park. They have several options for staying overnight like tent camping, screened shelters, and even rv sites. There are so many outdoor things to do here like: fish, hike, mountain bike, swim, kayak and canoe, and geocache. Huntsville SP also has a super secret spot called blue hole that is rather difficult to get in to, but if you can manage it’s a lake full of clear blue water. Priority on this lake goes to divers, as it’s a popular diving hole. They also don’t take reservations. So, if you’re not a diver it’s first come first served. The park rangers don’t make it overly easy about getting information on getting in but your best bet is to try on a weekday.

Lake Houston Wilderness Park

This is hands down one of our favorite parks. Just a short 30 minute drive from downtown this is one of the closest places to hike near Houston. There is a creek perfect for cooling off after a nice hot day that we spend hours in. There are also places to camp whether it be a tent, dry camping in an a-frame, of a fully furnished cabin there is an option for every kind of explorer. You can make reservations for camping options here. Lake Houston Wilderness Park also hosts some of the most interactive nature themed classes on the weekends the whole family can enjoy. Be sure to stop in at their nature center while you’re there and check out their array of snakes that were mostly caught in the park.

Houston Hikes: Brazos Bend State Park

With over 4, 987 acres of land that run along the Brazos River in Needville, Texas this park has a very diverse mix of native wildlife and plants covering several ecosystems. Make sure you bring your binoculars and a camera because wildlife at this park is booming. There are all sorts of things to do at this park like fish, see alligators, ride your horse, geocache, and even stay overnight at a campsite or in a cabin. Make sure to stay aware of the alligators and read their alligator safety guide. Learn all about the three ecosystems that thrive in the park and the reptiles that live there at their nature center. Houston Hikes: Galveston Island State Park

This is the perfect place to spend the day! You can swim in the ocean, fish, hike, mountain bike, observe nature, build sandcastles, hunt for seashells, or just sun bathe while listening to the waves crash! Note: the beach side of the park is closed until 2022. Stop in at their nature center open daily from 10-2 and check out their events page for all their upcoming programs.
